Whitewashing is the practice of casting white actors as non-white characters. In each of these individual collages, a white actress and an actress of color are featured. The white actress is someone who has partook in whitewashing within Hollywood film culture. The POC actress is representative of someone who could have played that character. The photo of the white actress is placed on top of the POC actress to symbolize the “masking” of a non-white identity. Flowers are placed around the collage to convey that same message: how society, media, and film gloss over a serious issue and tries to “beautify” it, making excuses.
